Attention to all air passengers. Air India, a leading airline of the Tata Group, has recently changed its baggage policy. This policy change occurred on May 2, 2024, when the airline announced that the free baggage limit would be reduced. Let us find out what the new limits are.

Earlier, Air India offered a free baggage allowance of up to 25 kg. However, after its acquisition by the Tata Group, the limit was reduced to 20 kg. The airline has further reduced the free baggage limit to 15 kg for domestic flight passengers. This means passengers who have booked the lowest fare tickets can carry a maximum of 15 kg of check-in baggage. The limit remains the same for those who have booked comfort and comfort plus fare category tickets.

It should be noted that Air India still allows passengers to carry multiple bags as long as the total weight is within the limit. This contrasts with other airlines that allow only one piece of luggage.

Last year, Air India introduced different fare classes, including economy, premium economy, business, and first classes. Additionally, three sub-classes were introduced: comfort, comfort plus, and flex. The benefits also differ depending on the ticket price and class. For instance, those who book an Economy Flex ticket can enjoy a free baggage allowance of up to 25 kg.

Air India’s new baggage policy seems to have been introduced in line with the DGCA orders to allow free baggage up to 15 kg. Most airlines are already following this limit, and experts suggest that this move will help Air India improve its balance sheet by reducing the aircraft’s weight.
