When an employee switches from one organization to another, they usually do so to pursue better career growth and higher salaries. The new employer opens a new EPF account and assigns a new Universal Account Number (UAN) to the employee. However, this creates a problem with the UAN number assigned earlier in the previous organization. It’s unclear what happens to the money in the old EPF account.
A UAN number is a unique 12-digit number assigned by the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) to all its customers. This number remains constant even if the employee switches companies. Linking the EPF account to this number ensures that there is no financial loss. All EPF accounts are linked to a Universal Account Number (UAN).
When an employee joins a new organization, they should provide their old UAN number immediately after opening the EPF account. This way, the money can be easily transferred from the old account. If the new organization assigns a new UAN number, the employee should merge it with the old UAN number.
Merging EPF accounts in the UAN number is a good practice when switching to different companies for employment. It allows for easy transfer of funds and avoids any potential financial loss. The old employer should not enter the last working day of the employee in the Electronic Challan and Return (ECR) to ensure a smooth transition.
Saving for retirement is crucial for financial security in old age. The EPF account and UAN number play a significant role in ensuring that employees can save and secure their financial future.
How to Merge UAN Numbers
- First, open https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in website.
- There, on the home page, you have to select Online Services which appears near One Member One EPF Account.
- All your personal account details are visible. You can also check your new EPF account number. Old accounts you want to transfer will also appear.
- Transferring your previous or current accounts requires verification by the old or current owner.
- Confirmation with the current owner is required to speed up the transfer process.
- Also, enter your previous EPF number and UAN number.
- After that, press the Get Detail button. All your drug account details will be visible immediately.
- After that click on Get OTP button. A one time password will be sent to your registered mobile number immediately. Immediately enter that number and press submit button.
- This will make the request to merge your EPF account successful. Now your new employer needs to validate your request. As soon as he does that the transfer of your accounts will be complete. The details of the merger status can be checked from time to time.
