UPI payments are growing rapidly in the country. However, along with the increase in UPI payments, there is a rise in fraud. Therefore, security measures are being implemented for UPI payments. UPI payments already require a UPI PIN, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is taking steps to enhance the security of UPI payments.
To ensure secure payments, UPI has decided to use biometrics for authentication of payments. NPCI is considering implementing fingerprint or face authentication and is in discussions with various startup companies to introduce biometric authentication in UPI. Many smartphones now come equipped with features such as fingerprint scanners and face recognition. NPCI plans to leverage these features to make UPI payments more secure.
For instance, users of Android phones with fingerprint scanners will be able to make payments using this feature. Additionally, most Android phones come with built-in face recognition capabilities. iPhone users can utilize Face ID to make UPI payments. Currently, a PIN is used for UPI payments, and users create a 4 or 6-digit PIN for authentication. This PIN is used for transactions across all UPI payment apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
