SMS on TDS: Salaried Taxpayers Received from Income Tax Dept? Do not panic

Many salaried employees across the country are receiving messages from the Income Tax Department regarding the tax deducted at source (TDS) on their wages. These messages contain details of the total TDS for the financial year 2023-24, including details of TDS deducted by employers for the quarter that ended on December 31. If you have received a similar message, there is no need to worry.

The message typically reads, “For the quarter ended December 31, the TDS amount deducted by the employer on this PAN *** number is Rs.. Also, in the financial year 2023-24, the total TDS is Rs.*. For complete information, see Form 26AS. In the last quarter, the ITD team aims to provide the receipt of TDS deposited in the previous financial year.” The Income Tax Department is sending these messages as an informative measure only.

Many employees who received this message misunderstood it and worried they would have to pay more taxes. However, there is no need to worry. The IT department provides this information for the benefit of the employees. The central government made this SMS alert facility available in 2016 to provide information to employees about their total TDS deductions.

IT experts advise employees to check the details provided in the message with their salary slips and ensure that there are no discrepancies before filing their ITR. Employees are recommended to wait until the end of June to file their ITR, and their employers will issue Form 16 to them by then. Additionally, as Form 26AS and AIS will be updated, there should be no difficulties in filing ITR. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the messages sent by the Income Tax Department, and checking the information will avoid any complexities in ITR filing.
